BA/English Language Learner Studies

The Bachelor of Arts in English Language Learner Studies major focuses on a comprehensive study of the broad application of linguistics in addressing second language learning needs. The program of study is designed around courses that are grounded in the Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) standards and NCATE standards.

All Gen Ed classes listed on 1st degree (AA/Buisness) 46 Gen Ed credits required for all degree's. Depending on the number of credits transferred in, you may be required to take one or both of Ashford University's introductory courses: EXP 105 Personal Dimensions of Education and PSY 202 Adult Development and Life Assessment. If you enter the program with fewer than twenty-four (24) transferable credits, you are required to successfully complete EXP 105 as your first course, followed by PSY 202 as your second course. If you enter the program with twenty-four (24) or more transferable credits, you will be required to successfully complete PSY 202 as your first course.

Credit Transfer Restrictions

Ashford University accepts up to 90 transfer credits from a two-year, regionally accredited institution, including Associate of Arts in Science credits, toward a Bachelor's degree program. Transfer up to 99 approved credits toward your Bachelor's degree. California Teachers of English Learners Certificate

Graduate California Teachers Of English Learners Certificate This program is available only for individuals with a California teaching credential. It fulfills requirements for the Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development (CLAD) certificate. Consisting of four six-week courses, the curriculum has been designed around the Candidate Competency Standards set forth by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Learners enrolled in this program gain a depth of knowledge regarding current theories and research in the specialized instruction of English-language development. They will develop a foundation for understanding cultural differences among English learners-and how those differences relate to academic achievement in a culturally inclusive environment. Language structure and use, and first- and second-language development is investigated.
