Academics The four most popular areas include commercial aviation, elementary education, psychology, and nursing. Undergraduate enrollment totaled 11,139 in fall 2010. The University offers a total of 218 fields of study, with 87 undergraduate majors, 70 underaduate minors, 70 minors, 59 master’s programs, 24 doctoral programs, a specialist diploma, and professional programs in law (J.D.) and medicine (M.D.). The campus is made up of 223 buildings (5.33 million square feet) on 549 acres (2.22 km2). The campus stretches roughly one and half miles from east to west and is divided by the meandering English Coulee. The western edge of campus is bordered by Interstate 29, the eastern edge is bordered with University Park, the Grand Forks railyards sit on the south side of campus, and the north side of campus is marked by U.S. Highway 2 which is called Gateway Drive in Grand Forks. The central and eastern areas of campus are the older sections and the northern and western areas are newer. Back then, the Dakota Territory was huge and sparsely populated with a variety of what were called “live wires” boosting their towns. The “live wire” for Grand Forks was George Walsh, who, after much dramatic maneuvering, managed to pass a bill locating the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks. He actually submitted to the Territorial Legislature a blank piece of paper, titled “A Bill for an Act Locating the University of North Dakota at Grand Forks…” By the time the bill reached the Appropriations Committee, he had substituted a completed bill. It was the first time the term “North Dakota” was used, for statehood was not reached for another six years. Because the Territorial Legislature believed in equality in parceling out state institutions, The Disappointed cities of Bismarck and Jamestown had to settle for the state penitentiary and “insane asylum” (now Jamestown State Hospital), respectively. «show less
